Hawaii's place in national health care debate

November 8th, 2009 by Jerry Burris

The historic health care reform bill passed by the U.S. House this week -- with the enthusiastic endorsement of Hawaii Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Mazie Hirono -- may change the way health care is offered in the United States for generations to come.

Granted, the bill, or something like it, must still pass the Senate. And that's no sure thing. But this is a big step.

One interesting trivia point is that the bill specifically continues an exemption for Hawaii, which has had  pre-paid health insurance plan since 1974. The exemption is not designed to keep Hawaii from meeting uniform national obligations. Rather, it is because Hawaii-- to this point at least -- has been ahead of the nation.

If this bill, or something like it, becomes law, it is imperative that Hawaii not take its well-earned exemption to fall behind the curve. There are still people without insurance even under the Hawaii law. It is both proper and sensible that Hawaii makes sure it remains in the forefront of guaranteeing health care coverage for all of its citizens.
