Furlough mess will continue
November 20th, 2009 by Jerry BurrisNews that leaders in both the state House and Senate are now “willing and able” to come back in special session to raid the “Rainy Day Fund” to cut back on public teacher furloughs is hardly the end of this story.
If that happens, up to $50 million will be set aside to keep teachers at work. But that hardly ends the problem. Teachers will still have to agree to use non-instructional days to fill in the blanks in the scholastic schedule.
And what about the other unions who touch on the schools, including the UPW and the HGEA? Will they demand the same deal? Is there enough in the Rainy Day Fund to take care of everyone?
The state and the unions have got themselves in a very big mess. It won’t be easy to get out of it.

Hawaii needs to take a closer look at the load placed on it's budget by giving away the farm to unions. We need to ask what key services should be provided by the State and the rest should be privatized.
